Keauhou Race update – March 13th race

March 4th, 2010

Right now, we are planning on doing registration at 7:30 a.m. for the Long Course at the HIPA Halau at Honokohau, with the long course race starting at 9:00 a.m. (possibly 9:30 a.m.) at Honokohau green buoy and go straight to Keauhou Bay (approximately 11 miles) so paddlers probably won’t be anywhere inside, near the Coast Guard Buoy or Kailua Pier, but using a straight line from Kaiwi Point to Keauhou.

Kids race & Short Course will do registration at Keauhou CC halau also open at 7:30 a.m., with kids race going straight out to sea (like Abbott Sea-Man race) and turning on our double hull canoe for a total of 3 miles. Juniors start at 9:00 a.m.

Short course will start 15 minutes after Junior course is pau (about 10 a.m.) – so folks doing the short course will hopefully lend canoes to some of the Junior paddlers. Short course will run north along coastline to Living Stones Church (approximately 7 miles round trip). Finish line for all 3 events will be inside Keauhou Bay at Doc Hill Estate point.

Sounds like a three ring circus, but with the new timing system and everyone having unique numbers, it should run smoothly. I will keep a separate clock running for timing the Juniors race so there shouldn’t be any duplicate numbers, even with loaner canoes being used by some of the Juniors.

This is the same day as Brew Fest (tickets are all sold out) as well as the Kauikeaouli Kamehameha III Birthday Celebration free concert at the Sheraton, so we will strive to get everything done on time, so folks can attend these other community events.

Note – start times are still to be confirmed – 9 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. Honokohau start for Long Course and Keauhou Bay start for Juniors race. Short course starting at Keauhou 15 minutes after last Junior crosses the finish line.

Any questions, just give me a call.

Aloha

H.I.P.A. Valentines Relay Results

February 14th, 2010

Happy Valentines Day

As promised. It took about 2 hours to sort through it.

For the geeks, the problems were, of course- boat numbers and new divisions added on race morning, plus a couple of other smaller pilikias that combined caused bigger problems.

Mahalo for participating in the fun event and supporting youth canoe paddling on Hawaii Island.

Valentines Relay 2010

Valentines Relay 2010
Aloha All, This event is alway a blast, we get to meet a lot of the partners of paddlers that do not normally attend our events. The Valentines Relay race was founded by Cheryl Villegas a few years ago, and she has re-taken the helm of the event in 2010.

The details

  • Race Registration 7:30am – H.I.P.A.’s Honokohau Halau
  • Please arrive early – non members need to do the waiver form (so please don’t act surprised when we ask)
  • Every team needs a “team name”
  • This is a relay race, we will not a have a solo division.
  • There is a sample entry form at www.hawaiipaddling.com
  • We do have a same sex “just friends” division” (but we WILL start rumors).
  • Race Start – approx. 10am
  • Course – Honokohau – Kamakahonu – Honokohau
  • It’s not confirmed, but I’m told there is a cruise ship in and we need to avoid the ship tender – just sayin’
  • Lunch and awards at Honokohau.
  • This event is a fundriaser – Entry fee $25 for members / $35 for non members.
  • There will be lots of great prizes.
  • I only heard from one person looking for a partner – If you don’t have one, I would suggest just showing up, people always do.

Other notes

  • I have about 50-60 t-shirts from clubs and races around the paddling world for the taking, mostly accumulated when I owned Canoes Cafe (or it owned me) or bay trading shirts at big races. Most used, some new,  I’ll bring them to the event for the taking, otherwise they are going to the Salvation Army.
  • While we are all at the halau, we will be attempting to sort out some of the canoe storage pilikia; canoes in wrong slots, or not paid for slots, or canoes needing slots. If you haven’t paid for your storage, bring your checkbook.
  • Any additional info today will be posted on the HIPA Blog and on Twitter.

One Paddler’s Story

February 9th, 2010

One Paddler’s Story

Saw the Orthopedic surgeon today, looks like my paddling career is officially over (I suspected such for a while). For those that don’t know, I had partial reconstructive surgery on my left shoulder three years ago and my range of motion in that shoulder has only improved to about 70%. This time it’s the other shoulder, Partial tear of the rotator cuff; aggressive physical therapy and possible surgery.  Not to worry, there was a day when I could no longer play Football, Baseball and Volleyball.  Turns out my weakest link are my shoulders; I’ve been fighting shoulder pain for 30 years, time to do something different, I’m tired of fighting the pain.

I frequently use the John Wooden quote: “Don’t let what you cannot do prevent you from doing what you can do”.

I have no regrets, in the last 20 years, I have participated in every paddling event on Hawaii Island multiple times, even some that don’t exist any more.  I have done races on every island (except Lanai), have an HCRA State Championship Gold medal (from 1994), a large box of MOKU medals and have crossed the Kaiwi channel 21x (OC-1, OC-2 & OC-6) paddling and as a coach. There are also the years I paddled in my youth.

I’ve had the opportunity to paddle for some the best coaches of the past couple of decades, Manny Vincient, Papa Kimitete, Richard Kimitete, John Kekua, Stan Cann, Afa Tualolo, Desmond Antone and I’ll never forget Sammy “Steamboat” Mokuahi (small kid days).

I have always paddled and played sports with reckless abandon since pop-warner football and little league baseball with virtually no major injuries (except my  my shoulder pilikia). I once even struck out 10 batters in a game.

My commitment to Hawaii Island Paddlesports Assn. is firm. It’s my time to give back to the sport. I will get back into bicycle riding and maybe racing (did that in my 20s)

For the self-promotion part, I will have some items to sell. I have Paddle bags, an OC-1 travel bag and quiver of paddles (Kialoa, Xylo and other) – stay tuned.

Also, if you are at this week’s Valentines race, I have a whole bunch of paddling t-shirts from years past from all over the paddling world, many of which I acquired in trade or when I owned Canoes Cafe, for the taking.

See you at the race.
